KEEP YOUR WOOD DECK FROM SPLINTERING AFTER PRESSURE WASHING

Periodically, every homeowner will need to pressure wash their home’s wood deck. Unfortunately, the deck material can splinter when pressure washed. Taylor Rental Plano has put together some suggestions to help avoid wood splintering when pressure washing.

We suggest:

  • Begin by using a cleaner formulated for use in a pressure washer on a wood deck. Ask the Taylor Rental Plano professional which cleaner is recommended.
  • Apply the cleaner with the black soap-dispensing nozzle. For additional cleaning, you can scrub with a synthetic deck brush, then go over it with the soap again. This is optional.
  • Leave the soap on the surface for the time recommended by the cleaner manufacturer. If not sure about the time, make sure and ask.
  • Rinse the area with a wide nozzle tip (White 40 degree). For more aggressive cleaning, switch to a 25-degree nozzle (green).
  • Hold the wand about a foot above the deck and move in the direction of the grain using overlapping passes. The longer you pause on any area, the more likely you are to etch the surface and cause splintering.
  • Washing in the morning or late afternoon is better than washing in the heat of the day because rapid drying can contribute to splintering. Additionally, try to avoid over-washing an area.
  • Maintain a consistent distance between the nozzle and the deck.
  • Allow the deck dry without placing the furniture back in its place to reduce the chance of light and dark areas created by uneven drying.
  • If a few splinters appear, gently sand them away with a hand-sanding block and 100-grit sandpaper.

Regular pressure washing extends the life of your deck. However, avoiding splintering is important. Your Taylor Rental Plano professional can help demonstrate the correct pressure washing method and answer any questions you may have.
